Mesopotamia

EMPIRES INTRODUCTION

As part of the sixth grade curriculum, our class did a simulation called empires to learn about the ancient civilization Mesopotamia. The class was divided into the empires of Mesopotamia, The Babylonians, The Hittites, The Persians, The Medes, and the Phoenicians.  For empires, there is a map and similar to battleship, there are letters A-J and numbers 1-10 on the top and left side so you can coordinate what square you will move your armies to. Each clan has different color magnets that represents an army. It takes two armies to own a square. Each square its worth a different amount of points and if a square worth 100 points is owned, then that clan gets to add 100 coins that they can use to buy public works projects or armies. Some squares are resource squares, like fish or olives or iron. If a clan owns a resource square, they get that resource coupon to use and trade. Every clan needs certain amount of each resources and if there is a resource that a clan needs, they can trade for it on the trading day. There are also challenges to earn coins. If a public works project is purchased, the square that the clan decides to put it on does not have to pay taxes or feed armies or something else, depending on the public works project.

Each week we had to complete a project on one component of civilization, the quality and thoroughness increasing with each level. The tribe task was the first one and the next week it was the village level and the next week it was the city-state, and finally the Empires task which is the most amazing task of all.

As my first project of Empires, I made a google slide about job specialization and social classes. In Mesopotamia, surpluses in food meant that not everyone had to search for food and so for the first time people were able to specialize in jobs. I included how to make a replica of an Ishtar sculpture. That would be the job of an artisan.
For my second task, I made a poster about the centralized government. I wrote a paragraph on the laws, Kings, and Goverment of Mesopotamia, and included pictures of King Hammurabi and Hammurabi’s laws. The government collected taxes and made sure one member of each family spent time on the construction of pubic works.

This was my city-state task. The component of civilization was religion so I made a painting of a ziggurat, a Mesopotamian Temple. Each city of Mesopotamia believed that they had their own patron god or goddess, who received much of their attention. That patron deity received special attention and much of the citizen’s worshipping time. Mesopotamians believed that all natural dilators and events, good and bad were caused by their god’s reaction to the actions they performed. Not very much good stuff happened so the gods were known as the gloomy gods of Mesopotamia.

My last project was  a movie that I collaborated with some classmates. The element of civilization was arts, architecture and public works. We worked very hard on our movie. I filmed, edited and narrated and my group members acted in it.
